Soundscapes is an El Sistema inspired youth development program, which strives to give students a life steering after-school experience. Through the program, students will strengthen their self-image, behavioral skills and leadership skills. Program participants will:
- Receive general and instrumental music instruction
- Participate in self-esteem building and other types of group social work sessions
- Be provided with the opportunity to excel in leadership positions
Soundscapes has partnered with the Newport News Public School system in order to provide an after-school program at Carver Elementary. Carver is a Title 1 school, which out of its 868 students, 491 (71.6%) are considered economically disadvantaged. The program began in October of 2009 and is currently working with approximately 55 1st grade students. During the 2010-2011 school year, we will expand to include two grades, 1st and 2nd, and hope to serve approximately 130 students. Soundscapes hopes to eventually duplicate and expand this model into all localities within Hampton Roads.
